Diagnosis of caries (tooth decay)

Caries (tooth decay) - a progressive destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth caused by acids in the mouth. This is usually easily diagnosed dental disease. Contact caries is less visible, usually occurs in the areas between adjoining teeth (interdental caries).

In the Pro-implant dental clinic we use digital intraoral camera to improve caries diagnosis and treatment. Up to 100-times enlarged image of the patient‘s teeth qualitatively is restored on a computer screen. Your doctor can assess visually invisible tooth disorders, to determine the exact location and size of the tooth decay. Intraoral camera shows to the patient the condition of his mouth and teeth, better understand the proposed treatment.

Treatment of the caries (tooth decay)

The initial stages of caries can be successfully treated without teeth drilling and filling. It is important to note and diagnose the early stage of tooth decay, which appears as a pigmented spot on the tooth surface (carious spot). Regular professional oral hygiene procedures and fluoride therapy stops tooth decay development. Fluoride therapy is effective if caries has not damaged the tooth enamel. Surface of a tooth is coated with fluoride varnish, a particularly emphasising the high-risk areas. Fluorine replenishes damaged tooth enamel with minerals. This prevents further development of dental caries. For a long-term protection of the problematic tooth, we recommend to repeated the procedure every 2-3 months.

Dental filling

When the decay damages the tooth enamel, the carious cavity appears (tooth cavity). Such a tooth needs to be filled. During the procedure local anesthesia is applied. Extremely sensitive patients may choose treatment with deep sedation.

Filling replaces decayed tissues of the tooth and protects the soft tissues from complications (eg. the pulpit - a tooth nerve inflammation). Modern fillings considered for durability and aesthetic qualities. Fillings are strong enough, and their color is identical to the color of the tooth, so filling blends in seamlessly and the tooth looks naturally.

Filling the front teeth, the ideal aesthetic results and durability not always is achieved. In such cases it is recommended to cover the front surface of the tooth with ceramic plates (laminates).

There is a small probability that the decay, after teeth filling, will recur. However, fillings will wear out over time. Secondary caries occurs when microcrackes appear between tooth surface and the filling, where bacteria accumulates. Due to poor quality of the teeth filling, use of old fillings, there is a possibility that previously filled teeth may need to be refilled.
